SAHMRI students receive Lions Medical Research Foundation Scholarship

Today, two SAHMRI researchers / University of Adelaide PhD students were awarded the Lions Medical Research Foundation Scholarship – a three-year postgraduate medical research scholarship.

Ms Krystyna Gieniec, from SAHMRI’s Gastrointestinal Cancer Biology Group (supported by the Cancer Council SA’s Beat Cancer Project) and Ms Emma Akers from SAHMRI’s Heart Health Theme were selected for the award based on academic merit, research potential and relevance of the research relating to cardiovascular, cancer and chronic lifestyle disease.

Ms Akers’ work is in the area of lipids and the role they play in atherosclerosis and calcification, and Ms Gieniec’s area of focus is bowel cancer and identifying novel therapeutic avenues for the targeting of this disease.

We’re thrilled that of the three recipients for 2017, two of them are PhD students located at SAHMRI.

This support and accolade from the Lions Medical Research Foundation will build an excellent foundation for PhD students, like Ms Akers and Ms Gieniec, as they begin their research careers.

Ms Akers and Ms Gieniec were presented with their awards at Government House today by the Governor of South Australia, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC.
