Key smoking statistics for South Australia 2014/15

Research to Impact

Each year, our Population Health behavioural scientists publish a statistical overview of smoking in South Australia.

Key statistics

  • respondents who reported living with either a general or severe mental illness were significantly more likely to be smokers than people living without either a general or severe mental illness
  • South Australians reported their experience of passive smoking - in 2014, 67.1% of the South Australian population reported that they had been exposed to someone else's cigarette smoking in the past two weeks
  • in 2014, 98.4% of the population (97.7% of smokers) believed that smoking caused illnesses and/or damage to the body. Lung cancer was the most common illness mentioned by respondents.

SAHMRI's Population Health Group is a part of our Cancer and Heart Health themes.
