The genetics of depression

Professor Ma-Li Wong and her team want to sequence your genome.

The hope is that we will move from a 'trial and error' approach to antidepressant prescription, to a model where each patient is given the antidepressant that is best suited to them.

Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide

Around 1,000,000 people in Australia are living with depression.

If our researchers can identify markers in the genomes of people experiencing depression, they aim to match each genetic variation to the antidepressant that will be most effective.

Professor Wong is affiliated with Flinders University of South Australia.
