The gut, the brain and 'feeling full'
Nearly two out of every three Australian adults are overweight or obese.
One in four Australian children are overweight or obese.
Professor Amanda Page is examining how the gut and small intestine are affected by appetite hormones, particularly in cases of high fat diet-induced obesity. The aim? To find a target that would allow for either a drug therapy to treat obesity, or a dietary strategy to reduce it.
What is basic science?
Basic science is often called bench or fundamental science. It is based around discovering the mechanisms that trigger different aspects of illness and health. Basic science is at the opposite end of the research spectrum from things like clinical trials. But they are fundamentally linked - most research that affects patients started as basic science.
