Heart foundation heart disease research theme leader announced

SAHMRI joins forces with The Heart Foundation to launch key heart disease research theme and announce inaugural theme leader.

The South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) has today formalised a collaborative partnership with the Heart Foundation as it plans the way forward in working with the research community to prevent and improve the quality of life for those suffering from heart disease.

While SAHMRI and the Heart Foundation will continue to work independently to achieve their research goals, it is anticipated that there will be further opportunities for collaboration in the future.

SAHMRI’s Executive Director, Professor Steve Wesselingh said a growing and ageing population will present a major challenge for health authorities with the prospect of the number of South Australians affected by heart disease set to jump dramatically.

“We’ve recognised the significant health challenges the South Australian community will face in coming years, which is why heart disease is one of our six key themes.” Professor Wesselingh said.

“Today marks another major milestone for our organisation, as we join forces with the Heart Foundation to launch our heart disease research theme and announce our inaugural theme leader.

“I’m thrilled to announce that Professor Steve Nicholls has returned home to Adelaide to assume the position as the SAHMRI Heart Foundation Heart Disease Theme Leader after a prestigious international career, most recently at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic in the United States."
