The Aboriginal Diabetes Strategy

Until the Aboriginal Diabetes Study was undertaken, there was no state-wide approach to managing and preventing diabetes in Aboriginal communitites.

Consultation with key groups

As with all of our research that relates to Aboriginal communities, this project involved extensive collaboration with Aboriginal groups. This consultation gave a voice to people living with diabetes and those living in communities where diabetes is particularly common. It also involved health care service providers, government and non-goverment organisations.

The aim of the Aboriginal Diabetes Strategy

The aim of developing this strategy is to create a five-year plan for how diabetes is managed in South Australia, for Aboriginal patients. A key aspect of the strategy is focused on prevention - how we can reduced the number of Aboriginal people being diagnosed with diabetes in the first place.
